It is 10: 39 in Panama, 8:40 in Oregon and I am safe and sound without incident. My biggest worry was getting from the airport to the Hostal safely, in the dark in an unfamiliar large city. At the baggage carousel there was man with an air force hat standing with his wife waiting for their suitcases. I asked if he had been to Panama before. His wife was Panamanian and he had lived for 20 years in Panama both in the service and as a private contractor. His wife told me that it was safe to take the airport taxis who were wearing green t shirts. It was a van, and one of the taxi drivers caught a ride with us. I talked to Jose for half and hour. He was a product of the public school system. He studied topography (geography) for a while before working full time to support his family. He suggested that I try sopa de pata (beef foot soup). I could find good food in Fondos. We got lost looking for the little Hostal, but once we found it everything went smoothly. Its a large house with rooms for rent. For 33 dollars I got a small room with my own bathroom. The place is run by a family with a number of daughters. I also me a Colombian family who is vacationing here and invited me to visit Colombia. All in all, it was worth overpaying the taxi drivers to be safe. Tomorrow I will be able to get a cab to the Hotel we are staying in for the orientation for 3 dollars. My adventure has begun.
