I have been selected to participate in the Panama Teacher Match program during the summer of 2016. The anticipated dates of the program are June 30 – August 13, 2016.
The Panama Teacher Match Program is a program sponsored by the U.S. Embassy Public Affairs Section in Panama and coordinated internationally by Partners of the Americas, Inc. with the objective of increasing English language capacity in the Panamanian public school system by matching eighteen American English teachers with Panamanian public school English teachers to assist in classroom instruction, curriculum development, and teacher training, as well as to promote mutual understanding between the American and Panamanian cultures. The program was created to support the work of the initiative Panamá Bilingüe, enacted recently by Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela. The Panamá Bilingüe initiative will send upwards of 500 Panamanian public school teachers to study in U.S. universities each year, over the next five years of his term in office with the goal of increasing English competency among Panamanian students and improving English teaching capabilities in country. The Panama Teacher Match program is meant to be the counterpart to President Varela’s initiative and will provide a level of in-country follow-up support. I am confident that I will create and nurture positive relationships that will grow well beyond the initial exchange. It is my hope that North Valley High School students will be able to participate in this experience through my blog this summer and through skypes and email exchanges with Panamanian students next year!
